How to Practice Your Spelling Words

Master your spelling with powerful practice features designed for effective learning

1

Choose Your Word Group

At the top of the Practice page, select which group you want to practice from the "Select Group" dropdown.

The dropdown shows each group's name and how many words it contains, like "Week 1 (15 words)".

💡 Tip: When you switch groups, the practice session restarts from the first word.

2

Click Any Word to Hear It

All your words appear as buttons below the controls. Click any word to hear it spoken out loud.

Each word card has a speaker icon (🔊). Click the card and the app speaks that word using the voice you selected.

Great for: Practicing one word multiple times, or quickly reviewing tricky words.

3

Choose a Voice

Use the "Voice" dropdown to pick who reads your words. Options include:

  • Olivia - English (United Kingdom) female voice
  • Smith - English (United Kingdom) male voice
  • Sophia - English (United States) female voice
  • Other system voices depending on your device

The current voice is shown at the bottom of the control panel with a small country flag color.

4

Adjust Speech Speed

Drag the "Speech Speed" slider (with a turtle icon 🐢) to make words spoken slower or faster.

Speed Options:

  • Very Slow (0.3x–0.4x) - Perfect for difficult words
  • Slow (0.5x–0.6x) - Clear pronunciation for learning
  • Normal (0.7x–0.9x) - Natural speaking pace (default 0.8x)
  • Fast (1.0x–1.2x) - Quick review
  • Very Fast (1.3x–1.5x) - Challenge mode

Recommended: Start at "Normal" speed, then slow down for harder words.

5

Control the Volume

Use the "Volume" slider to make the voice quieter or louder. It shows a percentage (0%–100%).

The speaker icon changes based on volume: muted, low, or high volume icon.

Auto-Play Mode (Hands-Free Practice!)

Turn on Auto-Play Mode with the toggle switch to automatically loop through all your words without clicking.

How Auto-Play Works:

  1. The app plays beep sounds to get your attention (you choose how many)
  2. Waits a moment after the beeps
  3. Speaks the current word
  4. Waits again (giving you time to write it down)
  5. Moves to the next word automatically
  6. Repeats until all words are done, then loops back to the first word

Customize Your Auto-Play Settings:

🔔

Number of Beeps Before Word

Choose 0–5 beeps. Beeps alert you that a new word is coming so you can get ready to write.

Default: 1 beep

⏱️

Delay After Beeps (before word)

How long to wait after beeps finish, before speaking the word. Range: 0–5 seconds.

Default: 1 second

✍️

Delay Between Words (after word)

How long to pause after the word is spoken, giving you time to write it down. Range: 1–10 seconds.

Default: 3 seconds

💡 Perfect for: Real spelling tests at home! Turn on auto-play, grab paper and pencil, and practice just like at school.

6

Control Which Word Plays (Auto-Play)

When auto-play is on, you see controls at the bottom to navigate words:

⏮️

Previous

Go back one word

🔄

Restart

Jump back to the first word

⏭️

Next

The current word is highlighted with a bright blue background and shows its position, like "5 / 15".

7

Visual Highlights

When auto-play is active, the current word being spoken gets a bright blue highlight and slightly grows larger.

This makes it easy to follow along visually as the app moves through your word list.

Effective Practice Tips

  • Start slow: Use "Slow" or "Very Slow" speed for new words, then increase as you improve
  • Test yourself: Turn on auto-play with 1 beep and 5 seconds between words to simulate a real test
  • Focus on trouble words: Click individual difficult words multiple times for extra practice
  • Mix it up: Try different voices and speeds to hear words in different ways
  • Regular practice: Short 10-minute sessions daily work better than one long session

📝 Example Practice Session

  1. 1. Select your "Week 3" group with 12 words
  2. 2. Choose "Olivia - UK English" voice
  3. 3. Set speech speed to "Normal" (0.8x)
